John Joseph Cooley

Born in southern Greenville County 19 Aug. 1819 (Possum Kingdom), he was the son of Hiram Cooley and Mary Ann Woodson Cooley. He was born the son of one of the richest men in Greenville county. He suffered the loss of his first wife Emily Chapman.

He went to war (Civil War) and fought for the south. During the war he was wounded, shot in the hip. For the rest of his life he walked with a limp.
After the war he made Corn Liquor for the Government. He attempted to make extra money by watering down the liquor. The inspector was going to test the batch that had been loaded and not wanting to get caught he had his son Thomas Oliver Cooley pull the pulg on the wagon and the whole batch was spilled onto the ground. (Oral History)
His second wife was Stacy Ann Chasteen.
John Joseph Cooley died 13 Dec 1896 and is buried next to his first wife Emily Chapman Cooley at Fork Shoals Baptist Church in southern Greenville County.

My great-great grandfather Robert W. Bruce married Martha Cooley, sister of John Joseph Cooley and daughter of Hiram Cooley. Robert died in 1863 in Georgia, during the War. (He was a private in the Confederate Army). I don't know anything much about his siblings. Do you know anything about the rest of the Cooleys of that generation?

Interesting tidbits I didn't know. John Joseph and Emily are my 2nd g-gparents. My father was Terrel, son of Dewey, son of Clayton, son of JJ.

John Joseph Cooley is the father of my great grandmother (Anna)Annie Prudence Cooley Chapman. Anne married John T Chapman. Anne is the 179 descendent of Thomas Chapman and John T Chapman is the 211 descendent of the same Thomas Chapman. Imagine my surprise when I found that out. John and Anne raised my dad (James F Chapman). His mother was Elizabeth Chapman Ross Whitfield. I saw that you had put a date and picture of her marker on the Pine Lawn Cemetary. Did you know her?

I have just found your blog & was glad to see an article on John Joseph Cooley. My ancestors include Hiram Cooley, father of J.J. I noticed that info on your blog states you are interested in families other than Cooley, such as Jordan. My great-grandmother Emily, a granddaughter of Hiram Cooley, was married to George W. Jordan, but I can find almost no information on him except his dates of birth & death on his tombstone. Every avenue I search leads me to a dead-end. Do you or anyone else you might know have any information on George W. Jordan? I don't even know what the W in his name stands for. All of my family is gone now so I have no relatives to ask. Thanks for any help you can offer. -- Linda Foley

JJ Cooley and his wife Emily Chapman owned/enslaved my 3rd great grandmother Rosannah Williams Johnson (1822-1905) - when Emily's father (Thomas) died in 1848 he gave Rose w/child to his daughter Emily.

John J. Cooley's and his brother Jacob (Jake) M. Cooley both sons of Hiram Cooley (Mary Ann Woodson Cooley was Jacob's mother) are both my 3x great grandpa Cooley's.Jacob and Stacy's daughter Elizabeth "Lizzy" Cooley Vinson was my 2x great Grandma and she married George W. Vinson they are buried at Cedar Shoals Baptist Church at Possum Kingdom.John J. Cooley also was the father of my 2x great Grandpa Clayton Cooley and his daughter was my great Grandma Ethour Cooley Vinson buried at Washington Baptist Church. Does anyone have any information about Jacob or his childrens Mother Stacy Chapman Boyce(named for her Grandmother Stacy Littleton Chapman) daughter of Elias and Malinda Jordan Chapman and I know they are buried at Cedar Shoals Baptist Church? I know they had 4 children together but i don't think they ever married.Jacob Cooley either died in the Civil War at the Battle of Adams Run,S.C. or died from a wound or disease.Does anyone know where they are buried or have any information about them? The family story is that Stacy was struck by lightning cooking over a open fireplace in 1880's or 1890's.Any information would be appreciated.I know this is very confusing with all of the relationships and names intertwined.

January 7,2023 This comment is for Kim Cooley Gorrell. Hello my name is Sandy and I saw on Familysearch that your Dad, Terrell 'Terry' Cooley had a book published in 1991 called the Cooley Heritage. Dewey Cooley and my 2x great grandfather William Clayton Cooley were half brothers. How do I go about finding this book? I don't see anything online. My email address is Sandragale99@gmail.com. Thank you for any information.
